About Ghaziabad

Why visit

the busy eastern gateway of the National Capital Region, where Delhi spills across the Hindon river into the fast-growing townships of Uttar Pradesh; among the most populous urban centres of Uttar Pradesh, Ghaziabad is, for the traveller, less a sightseeing city than a well-connected, good-value base on the NCR's eastern edge, and the launch point of the gleaming Namo Bharat rapid-rail that now streaks to Meerut in about forty-five minutes

Pure-veg food trail

  • a thoroughly vegetarian-friendly city in the North Indian mould
  • the sweet-and-snack halls of Bikanervala in Vasundhara near the Vaishali metro
  • Udupi South Indian houses around Kaushambi
  • the Rajasthani and Gujarati thali kitchens of Raj Nagar, where unlimited dal, kadhi and ghee-soaked rotis are the everyday fare
  • and, for a taste of the older pre-township city, the kulfi, falooda and chaat carts of the Ghantaghar and Turab Nagar bazaars

Top sights

  • the ancient Dudheshwar Nath Mandir, a revered Shiva shrine on Gaushala Road held in deep local devotion
  • the ISKCON Krishna temple near Vaishali with its calm sattvic prasad hall
  • and the City Forest green belt along the Hindon river, a breathing space of walking trails on the city's western flank

Best season

  • November to February, when the cool, dry weather makes the townships pleasant to explore
  • October and March are also comfortable
  • avoid the fierce dry heat of May and June, and carry an N95 mask in the peak winter weeks, as Ghaziabad shares the Delhi NCR air-quality season

Getting around

  • the Delhi Metro reaches the city on two lines, the Blue Line terminating at Vaishali and the Red Line at Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda)
  • the Namo Bharat rapid-rail stops at Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar and Duhai on its dash to Meerut
  • Ghaziabad Junction is a major railway stop, and expressways link the city quickly to central Delhi and Noida
