Hindon Riverfront

The Hindon Riverfront is Ghaziabad's most ambitious attempt to turn a long-neglected riverbank into a public promenade — and, for now, it is best understood as a work in progress rather than a finished attraction.

• The anchor, and the part you can actually enjoy today, is City Forest, a leafy municipal park spread along the Hindon near Karheda on the edge of Raj Nagar Extension.
• Everything else — the landscaped walkways, cycle tracks and ghats sketched out in official plans — belongs to a phased vision that is still taking shape on the ground, so arrive curious rather than expecting a polished waterfront.
• City Forest itself rewards an early-morning or late-afternoon visit.
• Wide jogging and cycling tracks loop through eucalyptus and shisham groves, families spread out across the lawns, and a small lake offers gentle pedal- and row-boating that has made it a favourite weekend outing for Trans-Hindon neighbourhoods.
• Birdlife gathers around the water in the cooler months, and the tree cover gives the park a genuinely green feel that is increasingly rare in this fast-urbanising corner of NCR.
• The riverfront proper is modelled, officials say, on Lucknow's Gomti Riverfront, with an initial stretch of roughly 1.6 km planned between City Forest and Raj Nagar Extension at an announced cost of around Rs 40 crore.
• Travellers should set expectations honestly: the Hindon along Ghaziabad has a serious pollution history — sewage and industrial effluent from the city's drains have left long reaches of the river badly degraded, with aquatic life all but gone — so this is a park-and-promenade experience, not a bathing or boating-on-the-river one.
• It is wise to check the current on-ground state before making a special trip.
• Vegetarian travellers will find the visit easy on principle but thin on options at the gate: City Forest is a bring-your-own-picnic sort of place, with only seasonal kiosks and thela vendors nearby.
• Ghaziabad's own sweet shops and bhojnalayas are vegetarian by tradition — just confirm there is no egg in any bakery item — while the nearest fully verified pure-veg restaurants sit about 15 km south in Noida.
• Pack water, fruit and homemade snacks if you plan to spend the morning here.
• Come in winter or the post-monsoon weeks for the greenest, most comfortable conditions, but keep Delhi-NCR's poor November-to-January air quality in mind — an N95 is sensible on smoggy mornings.
• Aim to arrive near opening for the calmest light and the best of the birdsong, before the joggers, cyclists and picnic crowds build through the day.
