Vegetarian highlight
Strictly pure-veg, satvik Braj fare: free temple bhandara meals, and the region's famous Mathura peda, hot kachori-sabzi with jalebi, rabri-malpua, and makhan-mishri offered as prasad. No onion-garlic in temple bhog; no bhang or thandai stalls recommended.
Pulse
Every Saturday — and especially on Shani Amavasya — thousands throng the Shani Dham for the sava-kos parikrama; the temple stays open through the night on Fridays and Saturdays and free bhandaras feed the crowds.

About Kokilavan

Tucked into the Kadamb and kokila groves of far-western Braj, near Kosi Kalan and just a few kilometres from Krishna's Nandgaon, Kokilavan is best known for the Kokilavan Shani Dham temple.

  • Tradition holds that Shani Dev performed long penance here and that a pleased Krishna gave him darshan in the form of a kokila (cuckoo) — hence the forest's name and its status as a Siddha site for relief from Shani dosha and Sade Sati.
  • The customary round is to bathe in the Surya Kund, take darshan of the black-stone Shani Dev, offer mustard oil, and walk the roughly three-kilometre sava-kos (1.25 Kosiya) parikrama through the van.
  • As everywhere in Braj, food is strictly pure-vegetarian and satvik: free bhandaras run near the temple, and the wider region is famous for Mathura peda, kachori-sabzi and makhan-mishri prasad.
  • Saturdays and Shani Amavasya bring immense crowds; weekday mornings are calmest.
  • Best paired with Nandgaon and Barsana.
