Baldeo (Dauji)

In the Braj heartland roughly 20 km east of Mathura, Baldeo — universally called Dauji — is a compact temple town devoted to Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna whom locals fondly address as Dauji or Baldau.

• Its heart is the Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple, traditionally dated to the 16th century, where a tall dark stone image of Balarama stands beside his consort Revati, a pairing said to be unique in Braj.
• Beside it lies the brick-walled Kshir Sagar, the "sea of milk" tank tied to the legend of the deity's discovery.
• Food here is entirely satvik and vegetarian: temple bhog of makkhan, mishri, milk and ghee, and simple bazaar stalls frying kachori-jalebi and pressing kesar peda, cooling lassi in clay kulhads.
• The town's signature moment is Huranga, an exuberant color-and-water Holi held the day after Rangwali Holi.
• Note that some Holi-season offerings involve bhang, so travelers should choose stalls mindfully.
• October to March is most comfortable; Dauji sits an easy road hop from Mathura and Vrindavan.
