Vallabhghat (Somnath Sea Ghat & Sunset Point)

A short walk south of the great Somnath temple, Vallabhghat is where the sacred geography of Prabhas meets the open Arabian Sea — a broad, paved sea-facing ghat that doubles as Somnath's most beloved sunset point.

• While the temple draws the crowds by day, it is here, in the last hour of light, that pilgrims and travellers drift down to the water's edge, settle on the stone steps and terraces, and watch the sun slide slowly into the sea.
• The horizon is unbroken; there is only water, sky and the low sound of surf, and on a clear evening the whole ghat glows amber and rose.
• The ghat takes its name in the Vaishnava tradition and sits within the wider tirth of Prabhas Patan, the age-old pilgrimage precinct where the Somnath Jyotirlinga — reckoned the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas — stands on the shore.
• Many visitors pair a walk here with the nearby Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Hiran, Kapila and the mythical Saraswati where they meet the sea, and with the Krishna-departure tirths that give Prabhas its deep place in tradition.
• Some pilgrims take a symbolic dip or sprinkle sea water; most simply sit in quiet reflection as the light fades and the temple's silhouette darkens against the sky behind them.
• Practically, Vallabhghat is best in the late afternoon and at dusk; arrive an hour before sunset to claim a spot on the upper terraces.
• Footwear can be slippery on wet stone, so tread carefully near the water, and keep well back from the surf, which can be strong.
• The ghat is a few minutes' walk or auto ride from the temple, making it an easy, unhurried close to a day of darshan.
• Photographers love the golden-hour light, and evenings are cooler and breezier than the sun-struck middle of the day.
• For food, stay with the pilgrim belt's pure-vegetarian kitchens rather than the seafood stalls of the Veraval port road.
• Several pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses cluster along the temple approach and the Somnath market lanes, serving unlimited rotli, shaak, dal-bhaat, khichdi, kadhi and farsan; the temple-side bhojanalayas and dharamshala dining halls offer simple, satvik pilgrim meals.
• For a lighter bite, look for pure-veg snack counters doing khaman, fafda-jalebi, samosa, chaat and hot masala chai, and cool down afterwards with fresh chaas, buttermilk or a kulfi near the temple gate.
