Somnath Sound & Light Show ("Jai Somnath")

As dusk settles over the Arabian Sea and the day's pilgrims thin out, the grounds beside the Somnath temple host one of Gujarat's most atmospheric evening experiences: the Somnath Sound & Light Show, popularly titled "Jai Somnath." Staged in the open air with the illuminated seafront temple as its backdrop, this son-et-lumière uses a sweep of coloured floodlighting, layered sound design and a resonant narrated script to walk visitors through the legend, mythology and long, many-chaptered heritage of the shrine.

• The show's best-known version carries a deep, theatrical Hindi narration that many associate with Amitabh Bachchan, giving the retelling a stately, almost cinematic gravity as the temple's stone silhouette glows against the darkening sky and the sound of the sea.
• The narrative traces Somnath's place in tradition as the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas and its association with the moon-god Soma, then follows the temple through its storied history.
• Somnath was damaged and rebuilt several times across the centuries and reconstructed in independent India, with the present temple consecrated in 1951 — a heritage the show presents as a story of enduring faith and repeated renewal rather than any single event.
• For first-time visitors, the roughly forty-five-minute programme is a useful orientation to why this coast draws pilgrims from across the country, tying together the mythology, the geography of Prabhas, and the Krishna-departure associations of the surrounding tirths.
• For dinner, the temple town is reassuringly friendly to vegetarians, and the pilgrim belt around the shrine is lined with pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses serving unlimited platters of rotli, shaak, dal, rice, farsan and sweets.
• Several bhojanalayas and dharamshala dining halls near the temple gate offer simple, wholesome sattvic meals, while the lodges along the Somnath–Veraval road run pure-veg kitchens turning out Gujarati thalis, Punjabi curries, South Indian tiffin and chaat.
• Because Veraval is a working fishing port, it is safest to stick to clearly signed pure-vegetarian eateries in the temple precinct; ask for a shudh shakahari thali and you will eat well before or after the show.
