Somnath Beach (Prabhas Beach)

Stretching along the Arabian Sea just south of the great Somnath temple, Somnath Beach — often called Prabhas Beach after the ancient tirth of Prabhas Patan — is the open, breezy edge of one of India's oldest pilgrimage towns.

• This is not a manicured resort strand but a broad, working shoreline where the roar of the sea provides a constant soundtrack to prayer and pilgrimage.
• For most visitors the beach is inseparable from the temple: after darshan, families drift down to the sand to feel the salt wind, dip their feet at the water's edge, and watch the enormous sky change colour over the waves.
• The beach's signature moment is sunset.
• As the sun sinks into the Arabian Sea, the silhouette of the Somnath shikhara catches the last light, and the sea-facing promenade fills with pilgrims, local families and children.
• Vendors sell tea, roasted snacks and toys, camels and horses are sometimes offered for short rides along the sand, and the mood is gently festive rather than commercial.
• The waters here are often rough with strong currents and undertow, so swimming is discouraged and most people wade only ankle-deep — the pleasure is in the vastness, the breeze and the light rather than in bathing.
• Prabhas holds deep significance in tradition as one of the sacred tirths associated with the departure of Lord Krishna from his earthly life, and the shoreline is dotted with small shrines and the nearby confluence of rivers with the sea at Triveni Sangam a short distance away.
• Early mornings are quiet and reflective, ideal for a barefoot walk before the day's heat; evenings are livelier and best for photography.
• Modest dress is appreciated given the beach's pilgrimage setting, and visitors are asked to help keep the sand litter-free.
• For food, this is pure-vegetarian and dry territory — Gujarat is a dry state — so plan around the many pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses clustered near the temple and along the Somnath–Veraval road.
• Simple pure-veg bhojanalayas and thali restaurants near the temple gate serve unlimited Gujarati thalis with rotli, shaak, dal, kadhi, rice and farsan, while snack stalls offer khaman, fafda-jalebi, dhokla and masala chai.
• Temple-area sweet shops sell ghee-rich mohanthal and pedas ideal as prasad.
• Avoid the seafood-oriented eateries near Veraval port; stick to the vegetarian thali houses and prasad counters of the Somnath belt.
