Prachi Tirth (Madhavrai, Prachi Sangam)

Roughly 25 to 30 kilometres inland from Somnath, past the sugarcane and groundnut fields of Sutrapada taluka in Gir Somnath district, the village of Prachi keeps one of Saurashtra's gentlest pilgrim secrets.

• Prachi Tirth is a river-confluence sanctuary rather than a single grand shrine: it gathers around the sluggish, reed-fringed course of the Prachi, a stream that local tradition venerates as a hidden form of the Saraswati.
• Where the waters meet, the sangam is ringed by ghats, a scatter of small stone shrines, and quiet kunds where devotees bathe before their prayers.
• It is the kind of place that rewards slow travellers who want the countryside of the Somnath circuit rather than its crowds.
• The spiritual heart of the cluster is the Madhavrai temple, dedicated to Vishnu in his Madhav (Krishna) aspect, which gives the tirth its devotional character and its enduring pull for Vaishnava pilgrims.
• Around it stand older, weather-worn shrines whose carved plinths and pillars are locally attributed to the Solanki era of temple building, though several sit in a partly ruined, endearingly overgrown state.
• Prachi carries a strong association with ancestral rites: many families travel here specifically to perform shraddha and pind-daan for departed elders, and the tirth is spoken of in the same breath as other places sacred to the memory of ancestors.
• Older tradition also links the confluence to the wanderings of the Pandavas during the Mahabharata, lending the modest site a long imaginative reach.
• Come at dawn, when mist lifts off the water and temple bells carry across the fields, and the appeal is obvious.
• Prachi is a rural hamlet, so food here runs to tea stalls, biscuits and simple offerings rather than sit-down meals; plan to eat a proper pure-veg thali back toward Somnath.
• Along Somnath's temple road you will find pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses serving unlimited rotli, shaak, dal, bhaat, farsan and jaggery-sweet touches, while Prabhas Patan and Veraval town add more pure-vegetarian bhojanalayas and prasad-style meals.
• Carry water and a packed snack for the excursion itself, as options at the tirth are limited.
