Chorwad Beach

Roughly 25 kilometres west of Somnath, where the Saurashtra coastline folds into low black rock and pale sand, Chorwad Beach offers a slow, unpolished counterpoint to the pilgrim rush of the Jyotirlinga town.

• This is not a manicured resort strand but a working shoreline: a fishing village edges the water, wooden boats rest on the sand at low tide, coconut and casuarina groves lean inland against the sea wind, and the Arabian Sea rolls in over shelves of tide-pooled rock.
• The mood is one of quiet retreat rather than spectacle, and that is precisely its appeal for travellers who want an unhurried coastal pause between temple visits.
• Chorwad carries a genteel historical footnote.
• In the early twentieth century the rulers of the princely state of Junagadh chose this stretch of coast as a seaside getaway, and a Nawabi palace was built here overlooking the water.
• In later decades the property was run for a time as a heritage hotel, and although its fortunes have varied, the palace and its garden setting remain the village's best-known landmark, lending Chorwad a faint air of faded aristocratic leisure.
• Frame it simply as regional heritage: a coastal bolt-hole of a former princely court, now weathered by sea air and time.
• Practically, Chorwad rewards a short, well-timed visit.
• The rocky sections make it more a place for walking, tide-pool watching and photography than for swimming, and the Arabian Sea here can carry strong currents, so caution near the water is sensible, especially with children.
• Come in the cool of early morning or for the long golden light before sunset, when fishing boats and rock pools catch the colour.
• Facilities are minimal and low-key, so it suits travellers happy with a rustic, undeveloped beach.
• Combine it easily with Somnath, Veraval or a Junagadh–Girnar loop, all within comfortable driving distance along the Saurashtra coast.
• For food, Chorwad village itself is modest, so most visitors eat back in Somnath or Veraval, where pure-vegetarian Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses cluster near the temple and along the main bazaar.
• Look for unlimited pure-veg thalis of rotli, shaak, dal, kadhi, rice and farsan, plus simple South-Indian and Punjabi vegetarian counters and temple-side snack stalls serving khaman, fafda, ganthiya and hot chai.
• Carry water and a few packed snacks for the beach itself, as reliable pure-veg options right at Chorwad are limited.
