Ahmedpur-Mandvi Beach

Ahmedpur-Mandvi Beach is one of Saurashtra's most generous stretches of coast — a wide, pale ribbon of clean sand curving along the Arabian Sea on the Gujarat mainland, directly opposite the island of Diu.

• It sits at the far south-eastern edge of the Somnath circuit, in Una taluka of Gir Somnath district, roughly ninety kilometres from the Somnath temple town and a natural pairing with a Diu excursion.
• A narrow channel of sea separates the mainland shore from the island, so the beach looks across the water to Diu's fort walls and church spires, giving the horizon an unusual layered depth for this coast.
• What sets Ahmedpur-Mandvi apart is space and calm.
• Unlike the busier ghats and tirths of the pilgrim belt, this is a place to simply walk — the sand runs long and unbroken, the surf is gentle, and mornings and late afternoons draw only a scattering of visitors.
• The light is at its best around sunrise and again in the golden hour before dusk, when the tide edge mirrors the sky and the outline of Diu softens into silhouette.
• Gujarat Tourism has long run a beach resort here, and small watersports operators sometimes offer rides in season, but the beach never loses its open, unhurried character.
• Casuarina and palm fringe parts of the shoreline, and the breeze off the sea keeps the afternoons bearable even in the warmer months.
• Practically, the beach is easiest to reach by road from Una or Diu; the nearest railhead is Delvada, and Diu's small airport lies just across the water.
• Carry water, sun protection and cash, as facilities are limited.
• Swim only where it is shallow and calm — there are no lifeguards, and the currents can be deceptive.
• The cleanest, quietest experience is a weekday visit outside the peak winter holiday rush.
• For food, plan around pure-vegetarian Gujarati and Kathiyawadi kitchens rather than the coast's seafood shacks.
• The beach resort restaurant may offer vegetarian Gujarati thali options, but confirm a pure-veg menu on arrival, as this is a fishing coast facing Diu and resort kitchens here commonly serve non-vegetarian dishes too.
• For a reliably vegetarian meal, lean on Una town, where pure-veg Gujarati thali houses and bhojanalayas serve unlimited vegetarian meals — rotla, shaak, dal, kadhi, khichdi and buttermilk — and simple veg dhabas along the Una road do the same.
• You will also find veg snacks, fafda-jalebi, dhokla and masala chai at local tea stalls.
• Ask specifically for pure-veg establishments, and carry snacks if you plan a long beach walk.
