Naini Lake

Tucked into the middle of Model Town — one of North Delhi's oldest planned residential colonies — Naini Lake is the kind of small, self-contained city lake that a neighbourhood grows up around rather than a grand set-piece attraction.

• Spread across roughly 6.5 acres and ringed by mature trees, it is maintained by Delhi Tourism as a public recreation spot, and for the families of Model Town, Kamla Nagar and GTB Nagar it doubles as the local park, jogging loop and weekend outing all at once.
• The lake's simple pleasures are its charm.
• A fleet of pedal-boats and a couple of Kashmiri-style shikaras drift out onto the water; a central fountain plays in the middle of the lake; and a small, densely wooded island near one bank serves as a refuge for resident and visiting birds, so morning walkers often catch cormorants, egrets, moorhens and the occasional kingfisher without leaving the colony.
• A paved promenade rings the water, shaded by old trees, and benches and lawns line the edges — enough for a slow circuit, a picnic or an hour of quiet with a book.
• The rhythm here is emphatically local.
• Early mornings bring the walking-and-yoga crowd; late afternoons and evenings bring children for the boats and families for the breeze off the water.
• It is at its most pleasant in the cooler months and on winter mornings when the light is soft — though North Delhi's air quality is genuinely poor from November to January, so an N95 mask is sensible on smoggy days, and the lake is best skipped on the worst-AQI mornings.
• For vegetarian travellers the setting is easy: Model Town and neighbouring Kamla Nagar are dense with pure-vegetarian mithai shops, chaat corners and South Indian eateries, and the trusted pure-veg names of Haldiram's, Bikanervala and old-Delhi's Kake Di Hatti are all a short drive south.
• Carry water, and confirm no egg at smaller bakeries as you would anywhere in the city.
