Lodhi Garden is the green heart of central Delhi and the city's best-loved park — a 90-acre expanse of lawns, lakes, and tree-lined paths laid out around a remarkable collection of 15th- and 16th-century monuments. Landscaped in its current form in 1936 and later redesigned by the celebrated landscape architect Joseph Allen Stein, the garden wraps its winding walkways around the tombs of the Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties, making it one of the rare places in the world where joggers, picnickers, and yoga groups share their morning with five centuries of history.

About

Lodhi Garden is the green heart of central Delhi and the city's best-loved park — a 90-acre expanse of lawns, lakes, and tree-lined paths laid out around a remarkable collection of 15th- and 16th-century monuments.

  • Landscaped in its current form in 1936 and later redesigned by the celebrated landscape architect Joseph Allen Stein, the garden wraps its winding walkways around the tombs of the Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties, making it one of the rare places in the world where joggers, picnickers, and yoga groups share their morning with five centuries of history.
  • The garden's monuments are its quiet highlights.
  • The octagonal Tomb of Mohammed Shah, the imposing Bara Gumbad with its high dome and adjoining hall, the tiled Shisha Gumbad, the Tomb of Sikandar Lodi within its own walled enclosure, and the graceful Athpula — an eight-piered stone bridge — are spread across the park, each an example of pre-Mughal Delhi Sultanate architecture.
  • The lakes draw migratory birds in winter, the rose garden and the National Bonsai Park add colour, and the whole space is shaded by old-growth trees.
  • For vegetarian travellers, Lodhi Garden could not be better placed.
  • Khan Market — one of Delhi's densest clusters of pure-vegetarian and veg-friendly cafés and restaurants — is a short walk from the eastern gate, and the India Habitat Centre and Lodhi Road eateries are equally close.
  • It is easy to pair a morning walk with an excellent breakfast or lunch.

Practical notes

entry is free and the garden is open from early morning until evening, every day. It is busiest and most beautiful at dawn, when Delhiites come to walk, jog, and practise yoga; weekday mornings are calm and golden. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water, and allow an hour or two to wander between the tombs, the lakes, and the rose garden. The paths are flat, wide, and pram- and wheelchair-friendly.

History & Significance

History

The monuments within Lodhi Garden date from the 15th and 16th centuries, the era of the Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties who ruled the Delhi Sultanate before the Mughals.

  • They include the tombs of Mohammed Shah (a Sayyid ruler) and Sikandar Lodi, along with the Bara Gumbad and Shisha Gumbad complexes.
  • The surrounding park was first landscaped in 1936, when the village around the tombs was relocated, and was later redesigned by the landscape architect Joseph Allen Stein, giving Delhi one of its finest public green spaces.

🏛️ Architect: The tombs are notable examples of Delhi Sultanate architecture — octagonal and square domed chambers, high arched façades, and surviving glazed tilework (most visible on the Shisha Gumbad, the "glass dome"). The park landscaping is credited to Joseph Allen Stein, who also designed the nearby India Habitat Centre.

Significance

Lodhi Garden is both an outdoor museum of pre-Mughal architecture and the most cherished public park in central Delhi.

  • It is a daily ritual for the city's walkers, joggers, and families, and one of the best places to understand the Sultanate-era city that preceded Mughal Shahjahanabad.
