Porbandar sits on Gujarat's Saurashtra coast, a low, salt-aired port town of pale miliolite limestone — the building stone the trade still calls Porbandar stone, after the harbour it shipped from rather than the quarries it came from. For most travellers it means one thing: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born here on 2 October 1869, in a three-storey haveli that still stands in the old quarter.
Long before Gandhi this was Sudamapuri, named for Sudama, the poor brahmin whose friendship with Krishna is one of the tradition's best-loved stories. Behind both lies the seat of the Jethwa Rajput Ranas, whose fortified Darbargadh and seafront palaces still shape the lanes.
Half a day covers the core — Kirti Mandir, Sudama Mandir and the old stone lanes — with an evening on the Chowpatty promenade. Give a second day to the Mokarsagar creeks at dawn and the Barda hills after, or to Madhavpur Ghed down the coast, with the older Shiva shrines inland behind the Barda.
The old-town bazaar lanes near Kirti Mandir are the eating quarter, a pure-veg run of farsan counters and halwai trays — fafda and ganthiya with fried chillies and papaya sambharo; khaman, dhokla and patra; mohanthal, penda and fresh jalebi sold by weight. Sit-down meals mean the Kathiawadi thali: bajra rotlo with ghee and jaggery, sev-tameta, ringna no oro and kadhi-khichdi. This is a working fishing port, so confirm a kitchen is pure vegetarian before you order.
Porbandar Airport (PBD) sits just outside town with limited flights, and Porbandar (PBR) is the in-town rail terminus; Rajkot, 180 km inland, is the main hub. The town stands on NH51 between Dwarka (105 km) and Somnath (130 km). The old quarter and Chowpatty are walkable, autorickshaws cover the rest, and the wetlands, Barda and Madhavpur need a hired car.
