About Junagadh

Why visit

Junagadh is the old walled city of the Saurashtra heartland, backed by Girnar — volcanic hills whose Gorakhnath Shikhar, at 1,117 m, is the highest point in Gujarat. The name means old fort; the inscribed boulder at its foot records the place as Girinagara. Two dharmic traditions hold the mountain sacred: Jains know it as Raivatagiri, the tirtha of Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankara, while Shaivas and Shaktas climb the same stairway to Amba and to Guru Dattatreya on the last peak.

Top sights

  • Girnar's stairway, traditionally counted as 9,999 steps, rising past a plateau of carved Jain temples — the black-stone Neminath shrine of 1128 CE and the thirteenth-century Vastupala-Tejapala group — to Ambaji and the Dattatreya paduka
  • Uparkot Fort, reopened in 2023 after a three-year restoration, with chambers cut for Buddhist monks in the second and third centuries and the stepwells Navghan Kuvo and Adi Kadi Vav
  • The Ashokan rock edicts, fourteen of about 250 BCE sharing one boulder with Rudradaman I's Sanskrit record of around 150 CE
  • The Mahabat Maqbara complex, an hour purely as architecture, where the adjoining vazir's mausoleum carries the spiral-stair minarets
  • Sakkarbaug, open since 1863 and central to Asiatic lion breeding

Best season

November to February is the comfortable window for the climb and the Lili Parikrama circuit around Kartik Purnima. The five-day Bhavnath fair at Girnar Taleti fills Maha Shivaratri in February or March; April to June is punishing on open stone.

Day rhythm

Start the stairway in the dark to be past the Jain plateau by sunrise. The Udankhatola ropeway, running since October 2020, lifts you from Bhavnath Taleti to the Ambaji peak in under ten minutes — but the Jain temples sit about a thousand steps below that upper station, so riders descend and climb back. Keep the town for the afternoon: Uparkot, the edicts and Sakkarbaug.

Pure-veg food trail

The Kathiyawadi table here leans strongly vegetarian. Crisp besan ganthiya with chai is the morning habit; Kalwa Chowk and the lanes near the railway station hold thali houses serving unlimited rotli, shaak, dal, kadhi and farsan, with bajra rotla, sev tameta and fierce garlic chutney. Summer brings the GI-tagged Gir Kesar mango from the Talala belt. Confirm a kitchen is pure vegetarian before ordering.

Getting around

Junagadh Junction (JND) sits on the Rajkot-Somnath line; Keshod (IXK) is 40 km away but flies a thin schedule, so Rajkot's Hirasar airport, 130 km, is the dependable arrival. Autos cover the walled town; Girnar Taleti is about 5 km east. Sasan Gir lies roughly 55 km south and Somnath about 95 km.
