Chakleshwar Mahadev

On the northern edge of the Mansi Ganga kund at Govardhan stands Chakleshwar Mahadev — one of Braj's most beloved Shiva shrines and, in the eyes of pilgrims, its cosmic sentry.

• Where most of Braj gazes toward Krishna, this modest riverside temple honours Lord Shiva as the kotwal or kshetrapala, the appointed guardian of Govardhan Hill.
• Tradition holds that when Krishna lifted Giriraj on his finger to shelter the cowherds from Indra's seven-day deluge, Shiva helped disperse the swirling waters with his chakra, and in gratitude was granted an eternal seat here.
• The name Chakleshwar (also Chakreshwar) carries that memory of the chakra and the storm it stilled.
• What sets this shrine apart is its unusual murti: five small black lingams enshrined together, worshipped as the pancha-mukhi (five-faced) form of Mahadev.
• Devotees connect these to the five Shiva-kshetrapalas said to stand watch over Braj — Bhuteshwar at Mathura, Gopeshwar at Vrindavan, Nandishwar at Nandgaon, Kameshwar at Kaman, and Chakleshwar here at Govardhan.
• Local lore attributes the original temple to Vajranabha, Krishna's great-grandson, with much later reconstruction after centuries of upheaval; treat these as cherished tradition rather than dated history.
• Just beside the temple is the bhajan-kutir of Srila Sanatana Goswami, the sixteenth-century Gaudiya saint who spent his final years at this very bank.
• From here he set out each day, well into his sixties, to walk the long Govardhan parikrama and offer his vow of obeisances to the hill and to every Vaishnava he met.
• Pilgrims often pause at his humble hut, bathe or sprinkle water at the adjoining Chakra Tirtha, then take darshan of the five lingams — a quiet, unhurried sequence far from the crush of the bigger Braj temples.
• For the vegetarian traveller, Govardhan is wholly pure-veg and sattvic in spirit, and the natural offering here is simple prasad and Braj sweets — desi-ghee peda above all.
• A firm caution, though: Govardhan and neighbouring Mathura sit in one of India's heaviest bhang (cannabis) belts, and a thandai or lassi from an unknown roadside stall can be laced with bhang and looks identical to a normal one.
• Never accept thandai from a random vendor; carry your own water and stick to trusted, verified pure-veg kitchens back in Mathura or Vrindavan.
• Come early morning or at evening aarti, when lamplight flickers on the Mansi Ganga and the ghat is at its most serene.
• A short, contemplative stop — pair it with the wider Govardhan parikrama for the fuller Braj experience.
