Thondi Historic Port Town & Beach

Thondi sits on the Palk Bay coast of Ramanathapuram district, roughly 50 kilometres north-east of Ramanathapuram town and about two and a half hours by road from Rameswaram — a small, sun-bleached coastal settlement that carries a far larger history than its present size suggests.

• Sangam-era Tamil poetry names more than one Thondi: the best known is the Chera port of the western seaboard, generally placed near the Kadalundi-Ponnani stretch of the Kerala coast, while this Palk Bay town is the east-coast claimant, associated in local tradition and in much scholarly writing with the Pandya seaboard.
• What is not seriously disputed is that this shore has served as a working anchorage for a very long time: a landing from which cotton, grain, palmyra goods and the produce of the inland plains moved across the narrow strait towards Sri Lanka and onward into the wider Indian Ocean trade.
• In later centuries the coast lay within the domain of the Sethupathi chieftains of Ramnad, whose authority over these landings, ferries and pilgrim routes shaped the maritime character of the whole Ramanathapuram seaboard.
• Almost nothing of that antiquity survives as a standing monument, which is precisely why Thondi rewards the traveller who comes for atmosphere rather than a checklist.
• What you find today is a low-key working town with a broad, flat, pale shore and the characteristically shallow, almost lagoon-still water of Palk Bay running out a long way before it deepens.
• Because the shoreline faces broadly east and north-east, sunrise comes straight off the water, and in the first half hour of light the horizon is an unbroken band of silver — one of the most photogenic and least crowded dawns anywhere on this coast.
• Wooden boats lie tilted on the sand, nets dry on wooden frames, and the everyday rhythm of a small harbour plays out in plain view.
• Inland of the beach road, salt pans, tamarind trees and stands of palmyra give the flat country its texture, while the older lanes hold weathered houses and modest neighbourhood shrines that hint at the town's trading past.
• Thondi works best as one stop on a slow loop rather than as a destination in itself.
• It pairs naturally with Devipattinam and its Navapashanam shore shrine, with Thiruppullani, and with the Ramalinga Vilasam palace complex at Ramanathapuram, before the road carries on towards Mandapam, the Pamban crossing and Rameswaram.
• There is no gate, ticket counter or fixed timing; equally, there are few visitor facilities, so carry drinking water and sun cover.
• Dress modestly, ask before photographing people at work, keep clear of boats being launched or hauled, and treat the sea with respect — the water is shallow but this is a working harbour with no lifeguards, so wading rather than swimming is the sensible choice.
• For food, plan carefully and keep expectations simple.
• Thondi is a working fishing town, so eateries here are mixed rather than uniformly vegetarian: look for a shop that displays an explicit pure-vegetarian board, and confirm with the cook before ordering.
• Where you find one, the bazaar road's small tiffin counters and 'meals' shops turn out idli, crisp dosai, ven pongal, medu vadai and strong filter coffee, busiest in the early morning and again at the evening tiffin hour.
• Ramanathapuram town, about 50 kilometres away, has a wider spread of pure-veg South Indian meals hotels serving unlimited banana-leaf sappadu with sambar, rasam, kootu and poriyal.
• Travellers passing Devipattinam and Thiruppullani will find simple vegetarian prasadam and tiffin near the temples.
• If your loop continues inland towards Karaikudi, the vegetarian Chettinad repertoire is the real reward — kuzhi paniyaram, idiyappam with kadalai kurma, seeyam, kandarappam and kavuni arisi — but Chettinad kitchens are widely non-vegetarian, so seek out a mess that states pure-veg on its board and check before you sit down.
