Rajagopuram (East Gopuram Tower)

Rising above the low rooftops of the temple town like a painted mountain, the Rajagopuram — the great eastern gateway tower of the Ramanathaswamy Temple — is the first thing most pilgrims see as they walk up from the shore.

• The nine-tier tower climbs to about 38 metres (126 feet), which makes it the tallest of the temple's own gopurams and the most recognisable landmark of the temple town; by contrast the western gopuram rises to roughly 78 feet, so the eastern tower dominates the complex by a wide margin.
• It faces east toward Agni Theertham and the open sea — the Palk Bay / Bay of Bengal shore that begins only a short walk directly beyond this gate, and which TasteYatra covers on its own page — and marks the principal approach to a shrine that is both one of the four Char Dham and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
• The scale is deliberately theatrical: a threshold built to make you feel small before you step inside.
• The tower is a textbook Dravidian gopuram — a tapering pyramid of nine diminishing storeys, each tier packed with rows of stucco figures of deities, guardians and celestial attendants, capped by a barrel-vaulted salakoshta crown studded with nine kalasams.
• Its build history is the detail worth carrying away.
• Work on the east Rajagopuram was begun in 1629 under Thalavai Sethupathi, but the nine-tier tower was only finished between 1897 and 1904, funded by the AL.AR. family of the Nattukottai Nagarathar (Chettiar) merchants of Devakottai in the Chettinad belt — a reminder that great South Indian temples grow across centuries, and a direct thread linking this gateway to the mansion towns inland.
• The stucco figures are repainted in bright temple hues in the run-up to each kumbhabhishekam consecration, so the tower's colour scheme you photograph today may differ from images taken a few years earlier.
• For viewing, stand back in the open square at the foot of East Car Street, where the full sweep of tiers reads clearly; early morning and the golden hour before dusk give the best light.
• Modest dress and bare feet apply inside the temple, and footwear stalls and cloakrooms sit close by.
• The surrounding processional car streets and their bazaar are a separate walk in their own right.
• For food, keep to the pilgrim belt around the tower, which is dominated by pure-vegetarian "meals" hotels and idli-dosa tiffin messes serving banana-leaf thalis and filter coffee through the day.
• Rameswaram is nonetheless a working fishing island, so look for an explicitly pure-veg board and confirm before you order rather than assuming any street or class of eatery is uniformly vegetarian.
