Sakshi Hanuman Temple

The Sakshi Hanuman Temple sits on the quiet inland road that runs from Rameswaram town toward the low green rise of Gandhamadhana, and it is one of the most storied of the island's small shrines.

• Its name comes from the Sanskrit sakshi, meaning "witness": by tradition, this is where Hanuman, returning from Lanka, gave Rama his eyewitness testimony that Sita had been found in the Ashoka grove, offering the chudamani — the jewel from her hair — as living proof.
• This is the island's own sthala-purana rather than the epic's geography; the Valmiki Ramayana places that handover further north, at Kishkindha, well before Rama's army reaches the seashore.
• The Rameswaram telling honours the moment of witness rather than the map, and pilgrims receive it in that spirit.
• The temple is deliberately modest — a compact sanctum with a single presiding image of Hanuman, garlanded and vermilion-marked, with none of the vast pillared scale of the great temple a few kilometres east.
• That intimacy is the point, and it is also what separates this shrine from the busier Panchamukha Hanuman temple inside the town.
• Sundara Kanda parayanam and Hanuman recitations are common here, as at Hanuman shrines all along the Ramayana trail; the Hanuman Chalisa you may hear is a Tulsidas Awadhi text carried south by North Indian pilgrims rather than the shrine's own Tamil liturgy.
• Mornings are calm, with sea breeze crossing the flat scrub of the island.
• Practically, this works as a pause rather than a destination: a short darshan, a few minutes of reading, and onward.
• It lies roughly 3 km inland of the Ramanathaswamy Temple — about ten minutes by auto-rickshaw, taxi or two-wheeler — and most travellers fold it into a half-day island circuit.
• Footwear comes off at the entrance, the stone underfoot heats up by mid-morning, and shade in the compound is limited, so early is genuinely better.
• For food, the shrine's own road has almost nothing beyond a stall or two selling tea, buttermilk and packaged snacks, so plan to eat back in the temple-town core.
• The Car Streets ringing the Ramanathaswamy Temple are dominated by pure-veg South Indian "meals" hotels and tiffin rooms — steaming idli, crisp dosai, medu vada with sambar and coconut chutney, and unlimited banana-leaf sappadu at lunch — and many pilgrims also take the free vegetarian annadhanam served at the main temple.
• Look for an explicitly pure-veg board and confirm before you order.
• Stay with the pure-veg meals hotels of the Car Street belt; Rameswaram is a working fishing island, and the harbour side of town and some multi-cuisine hotels on the main road serve seafood.
• Carry water and a fruit or two if you are continuing inland, since shade and stalls thin out beyond this point.
