Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge (Pamban Road Bridge)

Sweeping in a long, low curve across the pale green Pamban channel, the Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge is the moment most travellers realise they are crossing onto an island.

• Opened in 1988 and named in honour of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi — "Annai" is a Tamil honorific meaning "mother" — this two-lane bridge runs a little over two kilometres and was for years counted among India's longest sea bridges.
• It carries the national highway from Mandapam on the mainland, which is the true landfall of both the road and rail crossings, over to Pamban village on Rameswaram island; from there the road continues roughly 12–14 km east to Rameswaram town and the Ramanathaswamy Temple.
• For pilgrims travelling to one of the four Char Dham and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, this bridge is the threshold, and generations of families have marked the crossing with a quiet prayer as the sea opens on both sides.
• The drive itself is the attraction.
• As a vehicle climbs the gentle central hump, the horizon widens into a sheet of shallow, luminous water — the Gulf of Mannar to the south, and Palk Bay, the southern arm of the Palk Strait, to the north — dotted with small fishing craft and streaked with sandbars at low tide.
• The crossings line up in one sweep as you drive: immediately alongside stands the century-old Pamban railway bridge, retired from service in 2022, with its historic rolling-lift span, and beyond it the new vertical-lift rail bridge that now carries every train onto the island.
• Because this is a live two-lane highway, the view is meant to be absorbed from the moving vehicle; if you want to linger or photograph, use the causeway shoulders on either bank or the dedicated channel-side viewpoint rather than the carriageway.
• Practically, the bridge is a working highway rather than a monument you enter, so there is no ticket and no fixed hours.
• Wind funnels hard through the channel and can buffet two-wheelers and high-sided vehicles, so ride slowly and hold the lane.
• Salt spray is constant; wipe camera lenses and spectacles afterwards.
• Early morning is calmest, before the coach and lorry traffic builds, and it is also when the fishing fleet is heading out.
• For food, remember that the bridge sits in a working fishing belt: Pamban and Mandapam are fishing hamlets, and the dependable pure-vegetarian eating is in Rameswaram temple town, a short drive on.
• There, pure-veg South Indian "meals" hotels and tiffin houses cluster near the Ramanathaswamy Temple gopurams, serving crisp dosai, soft idli, sambar, filter coffee and unlimited banana-leaf sappadu.
• If you stop at a roadside tea-and-tiffin stall near the bridge, look for an explicitly pure-veg board and confirm with the cook before ordering.
