Prayagraj Junction (Heritage Railway Station)

Prayagraj Junction, for most of its life known as Allahabad Junction, is the grand old gateway to the confluence city and one of the most historic railway stations in northern India.

• Rail first reached here in the late 1850s: the Allahabad–Kanpur stretch opened around 1859, and within a few years the East Indian Railway had knitted the city into its trunk route, running through Howrah–Delhi services from the mid-1860s.
• That early importance never faded — the station remains the principal rail gateway to the Sangam, and the surrounding city serves as the headquarters of the North Central Railway zone, one of the busiest on the entire network.
• Set in the leafy, colonial-planned quarter of Civil Lines, the station wears its East Indian Railway heritage openly.
• The long facade, arched porticoes, exposed brick and stone detailing, and generous platforms speak to an era when Allahabad was a provincial capital and a hub of administration, learning and the freedom movement.
• During the Kumbh and the annual Magh Mela, the junction transforms into one of the most extraordinary logistical theatres on earth, funnelling millions of unhurried pilgrims toward the riverbanks with special trains, colour-coded holding areas and vast crowd-management systems — a peaceful mass movement of faith that the railways rehearse and refine year after year.
• On ordinary days it is simply the pulse of the city: overnight expresses from Delhi, Howrah, Mumbai and the south, commuters, students of the university city, and travellers stepping out to find the Sangam, Anand Bhavan, Khusro Bagh and Chandrashekhar Azad Park within easy reach.
• For the traveller, the junction is best understood as an orientation point.
• Civil Lines fans out immediately beyond the main entrance with its wide avenues, bookshops and cafes, while the older bazaars of Katra, Loknath and Chowk lie a short ride away toward the river.
• Eating vegetarian around the station is effortless, since Prayagraj has a deep pure-vegetarian street-food and sweet-shop tradition.
• Civil Lines has plenty of pure-veg thali kitchens, South Indian tiffin houses and chaat counters within walking distance of the concourse.
• A short auto ride toward the old city reaches the legendary pure-veg belt of Katra and Loknath — the kachori-sabzi, aloo-tikki, dahi-bhalla and jalebi stalls, the famed namkeen and sweet houses, and thick glasses of cold, plain (bhang-free) lassi.
• If you prefer to stay near the platforms, look for the pure-veg vendors and hedge by asking any mixed eatery for its vegetarian section; the safest and most rewarding choice, though, is to head to the Katra–Loknath sweet-and-chaat lanes for a genuine taste of Prayagraj.
