About Ooty

Why visit

Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is the queen of the Nilgiri hills — a former British summer capital at 2,240 m surrounded by tea estates, eucalyptus forests, and the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway. It is one of South India's most accessible cool-weather escapes.

Best season

April to June (summer escape) and September to November (post-monsoon clarity). Avoid July-August heavy monsoon (landslides on the Mettupalayam ghat road) and December-January peak winter rush.

Top sights

  • Nilgiri Mountain Railway (UNESCO World Heritage — 46 km, 5-hour steam toy train from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor)
  • Government Botanical Gardens (55-acre Victorian garden)
  • Ooty Lake (pedal-boats, horse-rides on the promenade)
  • Doddabetta Peak (2,637 m, highest in the Nilgiris)
  • Tea Museum at Coonoor
  • Sim's Park (Coonoor botanical)
  • Pykara Falls and Pykara Lake

Pure-veg food trail

  • South Indian filter coffee and rava dosa at Hotel Junior Kuppanna
  • Tibetan veg thukpa and momos at the Tibetan Market
  • legendary homemade chocolates at King Star and Modern Stores
  • fresh-baked fruit cakes at Sweet Home Bakery (since 1980)
  • wood-fired veg pizza at Earl's Secret
  • varkey biscuits and plum cake at the Coonoor heritage bakeries

Day rhythm

Day 1 toy train arrival from Mettupalayam, hotel check-in, Botanical Gardens evening. Day 2 Doddabetta sunrise, Ooty Lake, tea factory visit at Coonoor. Day 3 Pykara Falls and Avalanche Lake day-trip.

Where to stay

Budget — YWCA Anandagiri, Hotel Lakeview. Mid-range — Sterling Ooty Elk Hill, Sinclairs Retreat Ooty. Heritage — Savoy Ooty (Taj, 1841), King's Cliff (Coonoor).

Getting in

Coimbatore Airport (CJB) 88 km — 3-hour cab/taxi via Mettupalayam ghat. The toy train (Mettupalayam to Ooty) is the iconic approach — book 60 days in advance on IRCTC.

Getting around

  • Walking inside Ooty town
  • auto-rickshaws for short hops
  • hired taxi for Pykara and Avalanche day-trips

Budget snapshot

Backpacker ₹1,500/day · Mid-range ₹4,000/day · Heritage ₹15,000/day.

Quick tips

Toy train tickets sell out 60 days in advance — book the moment the IRCTC window opens. Carry a fleece even in summer; evenings drop to 12°C. Avoid weekend peak crowds (Friday-Sunday) if possible.

Skip

The "wax museum" and "thread garden" — both are tourist traps. Spend that time at Coonoor instead — it is quieter, prettier, and has the better tea estates.
