Omkareshwar Dam & Narmada Backwaters

Where the Narmada broadens into a glassy, island-freckled sheet below the Om-shaped Mandhata island, the Omkareshwar Dam gives this famous pilgrim town a second, quieter identity as a lakeside landscape.

• Part of the wider Narmada Valley hydroelectric scheme, the concrete dam harnesses the river a short distance from the temple town, and its reservoir has stilled a once-rushing channel into a broad, calm expanse ringed by the low, forested ridges of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges.
• For pilgrims who arrive for the Jyotirlinga, the water is the surprise second act — a place to slow down after the crush of the sanctum.
• The backwaters are best met from the water.
• Small motorboats and shared ferries put out from the ghats below the temples, tracing the sacred parikrama circuit around Mandhata island and drifting past the twin cluster of Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar shrines, the ghats where sadhus bathe, and the footbridges that stitch the island to the mainland.
• From the deck the town rises in tiers of spires and dharamshalas, and the reservoir opens out silver and still toward the hills.
• Early morning brings mist and birdsong; late afternoon lays a long gold light across the water that photographers prize.
• On the higher ground nearby, the towering Statue of Oneness — a 2023 memorial to the young Adi Shankara, who by tradition is believed to have studied in a riverside cave here — presides over the valley, and its terraces give a fine bird's-eye view of the shining spread of water.
• The dam itself is a working hydro installation, so access points are managed; the boating ghats, the island paths and the hilltop viewpoints are the places to take in the reservoir.
• The cooler, clear months from October to March are the most comfortable for boat rides and unhurried walks along the banks.
• Food around the backwaters is pure-vegetarian pilgrim fare, in keeping with this Narmada shrine town.
• Simple bhojanalayas and thali houses along the lanes climbing from the ghats serve unlimited Nimari–Malwa thalis — dal, seasonal sabzi, bajra or wheat rotis, rice and a sweet — while roadside stalls turn out poha–jalebi at dawn, sabudana khichdi and vada for fasting pilgrims, hot samosas and kachoris, and glasses of chai.
• Many temple-run and dharamshala kitchens offer clean sattvic bhojan, and satvik prasad is easy to find.
• For a reliable sit-down meal, look for the pure-veg thali restaurants near the main ghats and bus stand rather than any single brand.
