Jal Mahotsav Water & Adventure Festival

Every winter, a quiet spur of land on the vast Indira Sagar reservoir in Khandwa district transforms into Madhya Pradesh's most ambitious open-air carnival: the Jal Mahotsav, or Water Festival, at Hanuwantiya.

• Conceived and run by Madhya Pradesh Tourism, the event turns the placid backwaters of the Narmada's Indira Sagar dam into a playground of colour, motion and lakeside calm.
• A temporary "tent city" of Swiss-style luxury and standard tents rises along the water's edge, giving visitors the rare experience of sleeping beside one of Asia's largest man-made lakes with nothing but reeds, birdsong and open sky between them and the horizon.
• The festival's headline draw is its adventure menu.
• Depending on the season's programme, guests can drift over the reservoir in a hot-air balloon at dawn, try parasailing and jet-skiing on the water, glide down zip-lines, attempt a bungee-style jump, paraglide, cycle, or simply take a leisurely cruise to watch sunset melt into the lake.
• Boat races, kite flying, water-sports demonstrations and evening cultural performances of Malwa and Nimar folk music round out the calendar, making it as much a family outing as an adrenaline break.
• Because it sits within reach of the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga (roughly a two-to-three-hour drive by road) and the temple town of Maheshwar, many pilgrims fold a night at Hanuwantiya into a wider Narmada circuit.
• The festival typically opens in the cooler months — commonly from around mid-October and running through the winter into January or February — with exact dates announced each year by the state tourism board, so confirm the current schedule and book tent-city stays in advance.
• Activities are individually ticketed on site, and warm layers are essential for the chilly lakeside mornings and evenings.
• Food-wise, the Nimar–Malwa belt around Hanuwantiya is heartland vegetarian country, and the drive in or out passes plenty of honest meat-free kitchens.
• One important caution: the tent-city and resort dining at Hanuwantiya is operated by MP Tourism and is multi-cuisine, so it is not a pure-vegetarian kitchen — vegetarians who want a strictly meat-free meal should ask the staff to confirm before ordering.
• For a reliably pure-veg spread, lean instead on the family-run pure-veg thali houses and bhojanalayas of nearby Khandwa town and Mundi, the simple roadside pure-veg dhabas along the Mundi–Khandwa approach road (sabudana khichdi, poha, samosas, kachori, dal-baati and sweets), and the pilgrim eateries and temple prasad counters of Omkareshwar on the wider Narmada circuit — all entirely vegetarian and alcohol-free once you confirm the kitchen is fully veg.
