Why visit

Jim Corbett National Park, established in 1936 as India's first national park, is the country's flagship Bengal tiger reserve. Spread across 1,318 sq km of Kumaon-foothill jungle along the Ramganga river, it has the highest tiger density of any Indian park — though sightings remain a matter of luck. It is the easiest jungle weekend from Delhi-NCR (260 km, 6-hour drive).

Best season

November to June. Core zones close June 15 to November 15 for the monsoon. November-February is best for general sightings; March-June is hot but offers the highest tiger sighting probability as animals concentrate around shrinking waterholes.

Top safari zones

  • Dhikala (the iconic core zone — only by overnight stay at FRH Dhikala Forest Rest House)
  • Bijrani (most accessible day-zone, best for first-timers)
  • Jhirna (open year-round, sloth-bear specialty)
  • Dhela (newer zone, good leopard sightings)
  • Durga Devi (less-visited, birdlife rich)
  • Sitabani Buffer (private safaris, photography-friendly)

Pure-veg food trail

Kumaoni mountain cuisine — bhatt ki churkani (black-soybean curry), aloo ke gutke (mountain-spiced potatoes), gahat ki dal (horse-gram dal), bal mithai and singori (Kumaoni sweets from Almora). At resort buffets — North Indian thalis, dal makhani, paneer dishes, jungle-themed BBQ veg platters. Roadside dhabas on the Ramnagar-Kashipur highway serve excellent aloo paratha with white butter.

Day rhythm

Day 1 afternoon arrival at resort, check-in, sunset walk by Kosi river. Day 2 dawn safari (5:30 am) + dusk safari (3:00 pm), buffet meals in between. Day 3 morning safari + village walk + departure.

Where to stay

Getting around

Budget snapshot

Backpacker ₹3,000/day · Mid-range ₹7,500/day · Comfort ₹20,000/day (excluding safari permits at ~₹6,000 per Gypsy per zone).

Quick tips

Book Dhikala 45 days in advance — it sells out the day the window opens. Carry binoculars, neutral-coloured clothes, and a fleece for dawn safaris. Strictly no plastic inside the park. Mobile signal is patchy beyond Ramnagar.

Skip

"Tiger guarantee" claims by touts — no one can guarantee a sighting. Beware unlicensed safari operators outside the official gate.
