Why visit

Jim Corbett National Park (1936) is India's oldest national park and its flagship Bengal-tiger reserve. The 1,318 sq km of Kumaon-foothill jungle along the Ramganga river holds the highest tiger density of any Indian park. It is the easiest 3-day jungle escape from Delhi-NCR (260 km, 6-hour drive).

Best season

November to mid-June. Core zones close June 15 to November 15 for monsoon. November-February gives the best general sightings and comfortable safari temperatures. March-June is hot but offers the highest tiger sighting probability as animals concentrate around shrinking waterholes.

Top safari zones

  • Dhikala (the iconic core zone — only by overnight FRH stay, book 45 days ahead)
  • Bijrani (most accessible day zone, best for first-timers)
  • Jhirna (open year-round, sloth-bear specialty)
  • Dhela (newer zone, good leopard sightings)
  • Sitabani Buffer (private safaris, photography-friendly)

Pure-veg food trail

Kumaoni mountain classics — bhatt ki churkani (black-soybean curry), aloo ke gutke (mountain-spiced potatoes), gahat ki dal (horse-gram dal), mandua ki roti (finger-millet flatbread), kaapa (spinach-yogurt curry), bal mithai and singori (Almora sweets). Resort buffets — North Indian thalis, dal makhani, paneer dishes, jungle-themed BBQ veg platters. Roadside dhabas on Ramnagar-Kashipur highway — aloo paratha with white butter and mixed-pickle.

Day rhythm

Day 1 afternoon arrival, resort check-in, Kosi-riverside walk, Kumaoni-themed dinner. Day 2 dawn safari (5:30 am) Bijrani, breakfast back at resort, dusk safari (3:00 pm) Dhela or Jhirna. Day 3 morning safari + village walk + departure.

Where to stay

Budget — Corbett Tiger Den, Hotel Holiday Home (Ramnagar). Mid-range — Corbett Wild Iris Spa, Ashoka's Tiger Trail. Comfort — Taj Corbett Resort & Spa, Aahana The Corbett Wilderness, Jim's Jungle Retreat. Inside park — FRH Dhikala (book 45 days ahead on Uttarakhand Forest portal — sells out within hours).

Getting in

Train — Ramnagar Railway Station (RMR) is the gateway; overnight Corbett Link Express from Delhi. Road — 260 km from Delhi via NH-9 (6 hours). Nearest airport — Pantnagar (PGH) 80 km or Dehradun (DED) 230 km.

Getting around

Permits and safari Gypsy bookings via the official Uttarakhand Forest Department portal — slot quotas fill within 45 days. Always book via your resort or an MOEF-certified operator, never through unverified touts at the park gate.

Budget snapshot

₹15,000 – ₹30,000 per person mid-range (2 nights, 3 safaris at ~₹6,000 per Gypsy per zone, food, transport).

Quick tips

Book Dhikala 45 days in advance. Carry binoculars, neutral-coloured clothes (no bright red/yellow), and a fleece for dawn safaris. Strictly no plastic inside the park. Mobile signal is patchy beyond Ramnagar. Bring cash for safari tips and souvenir bal-mithai purchases.

Skip

"Tiger guarantee" claims by touts — no one can guarantee a sighting. Beware unlicensed safari operators outside the official gate. Skip the so-called "Garjia Devi" rope-bridge selfie spot on weekends — overcrowded and chaotic.
