About Haridwar

Haridwar ("Gateway of Hari," or by a second reading "Gateway of Hara/Shiva") is one of the seven sacred cities (Saptapuri) of Hinduism and the point where the Ganges emerges from the Himalayan foothills onto the flat northern plains.

  • This makes it the most accessible sacred Ganga bathing site in India — 220 km north of Delhi — and the traditional starting point for both the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimages (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath) and the Kumbh Mela cycle.
  • The spiritual heart is Har Ki Pauri (the Footstep of Hari) — a ghaat where the main bathing platform is held to mark the exact spot of Lord Vishnu's footprint in stone, and where the Ganges flows with the greatest sacred potency.
  • Every evening at sunset, a spectacular lamp aarti is performed: hundreds of brass lamps placed on leaf rafts are lit by white-robed priests and floated simultaneously down the river current as conch shells, bells, and the Ganga Aarti hymn fill the ghaat.
  • The sight of the lamp-rafts being carried away by the current in the gathering dark, with the ghaat packed with pilgrims, is one of India's most moving ritual experiences — free to attend, every day of the year.
  • The Mansa Devi Temple atop Bilwa Parvat hill (accessible by cable car, 10 minutes, or 45-minute stair climb) is the primary Shakti shrine of the region with panoramic views over the silver river and the plains beyond.
  • The Chandi Devi Temple on Neel Parvat (second cable car, or 3.5 km trek) completes the Devi circuit.
  • Haridwar is one of India's designated religious urban zones where the sale and consumption of meat and alcohol are prohibited throughout the city — one of its strictest pure-vegetarian environments.
  • The pilgrimage food culture features sattvic cooking (no onion or garlic in many establishments): rabdi at Mohan Ji Rabdiwale (thick reduced-milk dessert with saffron, a Haridwar signature served in clay bowls near Har Ki Pauri), jalebi-kachori breakfasts in the lanes behind the ghaat, chole bhature at Ahuja Milk Bhandar, and the packaged prasad and Ganga Jal shops around the ghats.
  • October to April is the most comfortable season; Kumbh Mela (every 12 years, next 2034) and Ardh Kumbh (every 6 years, next 2027) bring tens of millions of pilgrims — book accommodation 12+ months ahead.
