Suraj Pol (Sun Gate)

Suraj Pol, the Sun Gate, anchors the eastern edge of Jaipur's grid-planned old city — the deliberate mirror-twin of Chandpol, the Moon Gate, at the far western end.

• When Sawai Jai Singh II laid out his new capital in 1727, the two were set as a matched celestial pair on the city's long ceremonial spine: the sun rising in the east balancing the moon setting in the west.
• Named for Surya, the gate turns its arch toward the dawn, and the road running out through it historically pointed east toward the Galta gorge and its hilltop Surya (Sun) temple — a route pilgrims and traders both used long after the walls stopped mattering for defence.
• Unlike Jaipur's more photographed portals, Suraj Pol is not a ticketed sight but a living city gate.
• You meet it as an arched masonry portal washed in the same terracotta-pink that gives the walled city its nickname, with the shops of Surajpol Bazaar crowding right up to and through it.
• The gate's very name — Sun Gate — is its emblem, a nod to Surya and to the sunrise it faces; if you want to see it at its most fitting, come at first light when the low eastern sun strikes the pink plaster directly.
• This is workaday Jaipur rather than a manicured monument: handcarts, scooters, spice sacks and morning commuters pour through the arch, and the interest lies in watching the old ramparts still doing the ordinary job they were built for.
• Historically, Suraj Pol was one of the seven fortified gates piercing the great rampart wall that Jai Singh's engineers threw around the nine-block city.
• Each gate controlled a road; Suraj Pol governed the eastern approach, and its bazaar became one of the old town's busy trading streets.
• Reading the gate alongside Chandpol on the opposite side is the best way to understand how consciously the city's founders wove Vastu principles and cosmic symmetry into a very practical piece of urban planning.
• Vegetarian travellers are on comfortable ground here: this is the heart of Jaipur's old-city sweet-and-snack belt, and every venue worth naming nearby is pure-vegetarian.
• Laxmi Misthan Bhandar in Johari Bazaar is an explicitly eggless sweet house, Sahu Tea Stall on Chaura Rasta pours kulhad chai, and Ganesh Restaurant's rooftop near New Gate is dependable pure-veg — all within a short old-city walk.
• As always in Jaipur, treat a plain "Pure Veg" board with care and ask about egg in bakery items before you order.
• Set aside little more than a stop of twenty to thirty minutes: photograph the arch, wander a few metres into Surajpol Bazaar, then fold the gate into a broader old-city walk taking in Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and Johari Bazaar close by.
