About Gokarna
Gokarna, a small temple town on the Konkan coast of Karnataka 480 km north-west of Bengaluru, pairs one of South India's most important Shiva pilgrimage sites with a stunning sequence of five crescent beaches connected by a clifftop walking trail.
- The town is anchored by the Mahabaleshwar Temple, home to the Atmalinga of Shiva — one of the few temples in India that allows male devotees of all communities to touch the inner sanctum during darshan, and traditionally the most sacred Shaivite site between Kashi and Rameshwaram.
- From the temple, the beach trek runs south for about 6 km across five beaches in sequence: Gokarna Town Beach (the temple-side strand, busiest), Kudle Beach (the popular crescent with simple stays), Om Beach (named for its Sanskrit "ॐ" shape, the postcard view), Half Moon Beach (smaller, reached only on foot or by boat), and Paradise Beach (the southernmost, undeveloped).
- Unlike commercial beach destinations, Gokarna remains pleasantly low-key — the town's temple status keeps the vibe respectful, accommodation is mostly small guesthouses and beach cottages, and beach shacks are absent.
- For vegetarian travellers, Gokarna is exceptional: as a Brahmin temple town, the local food culture is entirely vegetarian and rooted in coastal Karnataka traditions — try the temple-zone Udupi udipi thalis, neer dosa (paper-thin rice crepes with coconut chutney), bisi bele bath, mangalore buns, and the unique Gokarna kayi holige (sweet coconut-jaggery flatbread).
- The clifftop café trail above Kudle and Om Beaches serves sattvic juice bowls, banana pancakes, and South Indian filter coffee with sweeping Arabian Sea sunset views.
- October to March is the comfortable window; avoid June-September monsoon when the cliff trail is slippery and unsafe.
