About Konkan & Karnataka Coast Trail

The Konkan and coastal Karnataka shoreline is one of India's most beautiful and least-spoilt stretches of coast — a 600-km ribbon of palm-fringed beaches, Maratha sea forts, ancient Shiva temples, and some of the country's finest vegetarian food.

  • This seven-day trail runs south from Mumbai's doorstep along the Arabian Sea, stitching together five gentle beach-and-temple towns connected by the scenic Konkan Railway and the coastal highway.
  • It begins at Alibaug, the Konkan getaway just an hour's ferry from Mumbai, where Chhatrapati Shivaji's Kolaba sea fort can be walked to at low tide and the Kanakeshwar hill temple looks out over the sea.
  • From there it drops down the Konkan to Tarkarli in Sindhudurg — the "Queen of Konkan beaches," with its clear blue water, India's first beach scuba-diving, and the magnificent island sea fort of Sindhudurg, built by Shivaji in 1664.
  • Crossing into Karnataka, the trail reaches Gokarna, the sacred Shaivite temple town with its serene Om and Kudle beaches, then Murudeshwar, where a 123-foot statue of Shiva sits in meditation on a sea-girt hill beside a towering 20-storey gopura, and finally Udupi, home of the revered Sri Krishna Matha and the very birthplace of the masala dosa and the sattvic Udupi cuisine that has spread across the world.
  • Throughout, the food is a highlight and entirely vegetarian: Konkani sol kadhi and modak, Malvani vegetable thalis, coconut-rich coastal curries, and the temple-town dosas, idlis, and filter coffee of the Karnataka coast.
  • The best season is October to March, when the sea is calm and the skies clear.
  • The whole route links together by a mix of the scenic Konkan Railway and short coastal drives, and travellers with more time can pause at Ganpatipule, Ratnagiri, or Karwar along the way.
  • This is a relaxed, scenic, deeply flavourful coastal journey — equally rewarding for beach lovers, temple pilgrims, and food travellers.
