About Karnataka Coast & Hampi Run
This seven-day run links the two most spectacular faces of Karnataka — the surreal ruined empire of Hampi, scattered across a boulder-strewn moonscape inland, and the palm-fringed temple coast of the Arabian Sea — in one richly varied journey of heritage, beaches, and some of India's finest vegetarian food.
- It begins at Hampi, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once Vijayanagara, capital of a 14th-16th century Hindu empire that rivalled medieval Rome — today an extraordinary landscape of giant balanced granite boulders along the Tungabhadra river, strewn with temples, palaces, and bazaars.
- Three days allow time for the still-worshipped Virupaksha Temple, the iconic Vittala Temple with its stone chariot and musical pillars, the Royal Centre with its Lotus Mahal and elephant stables, and the ferry across to the low-key cafés of "Hippie Island." The run then crosses to the coast at Gokarna, the sacred Shaivite temple town with its serene Om and Kudle beaches; continues to Murudeshwar, where a 123-foot statue of Shiva sits in meditation on a sea-girt hill beside a towering 20-storey gopura; and ends at Udupi, home of the revered Sri Krishna Matha and the very birthplace of the masala dosa and the sattvic Udupi cuisine that has spread across the world.
- Throughout, the food is a highlight and entirely vegetarian — the Hampi bazaar's thalis and riverside café bowls, the coastal towns' coconut-rich curries, and the temple-town dosas, idlis, and filter coffee of the Karnataka coast.
- The best season is October to March, when both the ruins and the sea are at their most pleasant.
- The single long leg, between Hampi and the coast, can be eased by taking the Konkan Railway from Hubballi, leaving more time for the boulders and the beaches.
- From the golden light on Hampi's boulders at dawn to the sunset behind Murudeshwar's giant Shiva, this is a journey of remarkable contrasts across one of South India's most rewarding states.
