About Wayanad

Why visit

Wayanad is the misty highland district of north Kerala, sitting on the Western Ghats at 700-2,100 m elevation. It is a slower, greener alternative to Munnar — fewer crowds, denser forest, and an estate culture built on coffee, pepper, cardamom, and vanilla.

Best season

October to May is the comfortable window. June to September is the dramatic southwest monsoon — heaviest rains in India, waterfalls at full force, hotel rates at half, but some trails and viewpoints close.

Top sights

  • Edakkal Caves (8,000-year-old petroglyphs, 45-min uphill trek)
  • Banasura Sagar Dam (India's largest earthen dam, boating, viewpoint)
  • Soochipara and Meenmutty Waterfalls
  • Chembra Peak (heart-shaped lake, day-trek)
  • Pookode Lake (pedal-boats, freshwater turtles)
  • Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Muthanga and Tholpetty zones — elephants, gaur, leopard)

Pure-veg food trail

  • Kerala sadya (banana-leaf veg feast — 15+ dishes including avial, thoran, olan, sambar, payasam) at Hotel Aryaas and Jubilee Restaurant in Kalpetta
  • Malabar parotta with veg kurma
  • estate-fresh filter coffee at Suriyas Coffee Lounge
  • tribal-style bamboo-shoot curry at homestay tables
  • banana fritters and unniyappam at small bakery counters

Day rhythm

Mornings for treks and caves before mist clears. Afternoons for plantation walks. Evenings for waterfalls and lake boating. Most travellers base in Kalpetta or Vythiri (3-night minimum).

Where to stay

Budget — Pranavam Homestay (Kalpetta). Mid-range — Vythiri Resort, Banasura Hill Resort (mud architecture). Comfort — Wayanad Wild (CGH Earth, rainforest), Taj Wayanad Resort.

Getting in

Nearest airports — Kannur (CNN) 90 km, Calicut (CCJ) 100 km, Mysuru (MYQ) 130 km. Nearest railhead — Kozhikode (Calicut) 90 km. From Bengaluru it is a 270-km scenic drive via Mysuru and Bandipur.

Getting around

Self-drive car or hired taxi is essential — sights are spread across a 40-km radius and public transport is sparse.

Budget snapshot

Backpacker ₹1,800/day · Mid-range ₹4,500/day · Comfort ₹12,000/day.

Quick tips

Carry a light fleece even in summer — Wayanad nights drop to 15°C. Leeches are common on monsoon treks; carry salt sachets. Plastic-bag ban is strict; carry a cloth bag.

Skip

The crowded Chain Tree viewpoint on weekends; the experience is better at Lakkidi View Point a kilometre away.
