Vikram Kirti Mandir Museum

Vikram Kirti Mandir is Ujjain's principal cultural-museum complex, conceived as a lasting civic monument to the city's antiquity. It was established in 1944 to mark the two-thousandth year of the Vikram Samvat era, the calendar traditionally linked to the legendary King Vikramaditya of Ujjayini.

• Rather than a single gallery, the campus was planned as a cluster of institutions — a museum of archaeology and sculpture, an art gallery, an auditorium, a public library, and the Scindia Oriental Research Institute — gathering under one address the scholarship, artefacts and manuscripts that document Ujjain's long life as a seat of learning, astronomy and Shaiva devotion on the Kshipra river.
• For a visitor, the draw is the chance to read Ujjain's deep history in physical objects.
• The archaeology and sculpture galleries display stone images, terracottas and architectural fragments recovered from the Malwa region, tracing centuries of temple art.
• Cabinets of coins and copper-plate records speak to the trade routes and dynasties that passed through ancient Ujjayini, long a prime meridian in Indian astronomy.
• The associated Scindia Oriental Research Institute is especially prized by scholars for its large holding of palm-leaf and paper manuscripts, including illustrated volumes, kept as a working reference collection rather than mere display.
• Together the halls give context to the living temple-city you experience elsewhere in Ujjain — the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, the ghats, and the Simhastha Kumbh grounds.
