Swapneshwar Mahadev Temple

Tucked into the temple-lattice of old Ujjain, Swapneshwar Mahadev belongs to the city's most quietly beloved devotional tradition — the Chaurasi Mahadev, the circuit of eighty-four Shiva shrines that pilgrims trace across Avantika through the sacred month of Shravan and around Mahashivratri.

• By tradition each of these Mahadevs carries a distinct temperament and boon, and Swapneshwar is remembered as the "swapna" — dream — Mahadev: the linga to which devotees bring the wishes and visions that visit them in sleep, praying for clarity of mind, the untangling of confusion, and the fulfilment of longings glimpsed at night.
