Shipra Riverfront Promenade

The Shipra Riverfront Promenade is Ujjain's most soulful stretch of water — a broad cascade of stone steps and a paved riverside walk that links Ram Ghat with Datta Akhara Ghat and the neighbouring bathing ghats along the eastern bank of the Kshipra, the river Hindus revere as the Shipra.

• Ram Ghat, the oldest and most cherished of these, sits just a short walk downhill from the Mahakaleshwar temple, its tiers of ochre and grey masonry sloping gently into the slow, green current while painted shrines and shikhara spires crowd the skyline behind.
• For pilgrims this is sacred geography.
• By tradition the Shipra's banks are counted among the tirthas linked to the churning of the ocean and the nectar of immortality, and every twelve years the ghats become the beating heart of the Simhastha Kumbh, one of the world's largest peaceful spiritual gatherings, when the akharas process to the water and vast crowds take a ritual dip at dawn.
• Even in ordinary months the riverfront hums quietly: priests perform rites for families, marigold garlands and floating diyas drift on the current, and temple bells carry across from the far bank.
• Come at dusk, when the promenade is at its finest.
• As the light softens an evening aarti is offered on the steps, lamps are circled to the beat of drums, and the whole waterline glows amber.
• It is an unhurried, photogenic place for a slow stroll — watch boatmen pole their skiffs, follow the walkway between the ghats, and pause on the upper terraces for a panorama of spires and riverside shrines.
• Mornings are equally lovely, cool and mist-touched before the pilgrims arrive.
• Ram Ghat sits in the thick of the old city's pure-vegetarian food belt, so you are never far from a good meal.
• The lanes climbing toward Gopal Mandir and Tower Chowk are lined with pure-veg poha-jalebi stalls — Ujjain's celebrated breakfast — plus sattvic bhojanalayas serving thali, samosa and kachori near the Mahakaleshwar approach.
• Cool off with a plain, bhang-free thandai or a sweet lassi rather than any intoxicant-laced version, and round things off with hot jalebi or malpua from the temple-side sweet shops.
