Scindia Oriental Research Institute

Tucked inside the Vikram Kirti Mandir cultural complex on the western edge of Ujjain, the Scindia Oriental Research Institute is one of central India's great quiet treasures — a scholarly library where the intellectual heritage of the subcontinent is preserved leaf by fragile leaf.

• The Kirti Mandir was raised in the 1940s to honour the memory of the legendary king Vikramaditya, after whom the Vikram Samvat calendar era is named, and the research institute grew alongside it as a repository for the vast manuscript wealth gathered under the patronage of the Scindia (Sindhia) family of Gwalior.
• Today it functions as a manuscript library and research centre, more sanctuary than showroom, drawing Sanskritists, palaeographers and curious travellers who want to see India's written memory in its original form.

• The institute holds many thousands of manuscripts — some incised on prepared palm leaf, others penned on handmade paper — spanning astronomy, astrology, mathematics, grammar, poetics, Ayurveda, philosophy and religious literature.
• Ujjain's deep association with astronomy (this was the prime meridian of classical Indian geography and the seat of the astronomer Varahamihira) gives the jyotisha and mathematical holdings special resonance.
