Sarafa Bazaar (Jewellery & Night Food Market)

Threaded through the tightly packed lanes of Ujjain's old city, a short walk from the silver-domed Gopal Mandir and the great Mahakaleshwar temple, Sarafa Bazaar is the town's traditional gold-and-silver quarter.

• "Sarafa" means bullion or the trade of precious metals, and the name still holds true: for generations the narrow street has been lined with family-run jewellers weighing ornaments on brass scales behind glass-fronted counters, their shutters clattering up each morning as the temple bells begin.
• It is one of the oldest continuously working market lanes in a city that has traded, bathed and worshipped on the banks of the Shipra for well over two thousand years, and a wander through it is as much a walk through Ujjain's mercantile history as a shopping trip.

• The surrounding cluster — Patni Bazaar, Gudri and the Gopal Mandir square — spills into it, so the boundary between jewellery lane and general old-town market blurs into one dense, sensory tangle of cloth, brassware, garlands and puja supplies.
• Photographers love the layered facades, the tangle of overhead wires, and the doorway shrines tucked between shopfronts.
• After the jewellers pull down their shutters in the evening, parts of the quarter take on a second life as an informal food street, with vendors and long-standing sweet shops serving the after-darshan crowd.
• Expect classic Malwa street snacks rather than a polished food court — arrive hungry, go where the queues are longest, and (following Ujjain's temple-town custom) ask only for plain, bhang-free thandai or lassi; never anything intoxicating.
