ISKCON Ujjain (Sri Sri Radha Madanmohan)

In a city defined by the fierce, ash-smeared majesty of Mahakal, ISKCON Ujjain offers a gentler devotional register — the tender, melodic bhakti of Krishna and Radha.

• Set on Hare Krishna Land in the Bharatpuri quarter, a short ride from the Shipra ghats and the Mahakaleshwar corridor, this temple of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness enshrines Sri Sri Radha-Madanmohan, the divine couple whose black-and-golden forms stand garlanded and richly dressed on the central altar.
• The name Madanmohan — "the enchanter of Cupid" — is one of Krishna's most beloved epithets, and the deities here are tended through the day with the familiar ISKCON rhythm of aartis, from the pre-dawn Mangala aarti to the evening Sandhya aarti when conch, bell and mridanga fill the hall.
• For the traveller, the appeal is atmospheric as much as architectural.
• Where much of Ujjain moves to the rhythm of Shaiva ritual, ISKCON's marble-cool prayer hall is a place of soft light, the swell of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, and the swirl of devotees dancing in kirtan.
• The society runs regular Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam classes, Sunday feast programmes, and festival celebrations that peak at Janmashtami, when Krishna's midnight birth is marked with jhulan swings, abhishekam and singing that runs late into the night.
• A temple shop stocks japa beads, devotional books and tulsi malas, and volunteers are typically happy to explain the deities and the daily schedule to first-time visitors.
• Food is central to the ISKCON experience, and this is where the temple shines for a vegetarian traveller.
• Everything offered here is strictly sattvic — pure-vegetarian, cooked without onion or garlic, first offered to the deities and then served as krishna-prasadam.
• On festival and Sunday-feast days the temple distributes hot prasadam of khichdi, subzi, halwa and sweet rice, and its counter often sells laddus and other consecrated sweets.
• If you would rather sit down to a full meal, ask the volunteers whether the temple's Govinda's-style prasadam counter is serving that day; failing that, the pure-veg thali houses, poha-jalebi stalls and lassi shops of central Ujjain near the Mahakal area are an easy, wholly vegetarian fallback for a satisfying plate.
