Gopal Mandir

Rising white and serene above the clamour of Ujjain's central bazaar, Gopal Mandir is one of the finest examples of Maratha temple architecture in Malwa.

• Also known as the Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir, it is dedicated to Krishna in his Dwarkadhish (Gopal) form and was raised, by tradition, in the first half of the nineteenth century by Bayajabai Shinde, the queen of the Scindia (Shinde) ruler Daulat Rao.
• The temple's marble spire, arched verandahs and delicately worked pillars reflect the confident, cosmopolitan taste of the Maratha court, and its scale — set squarely amid the shops of Patni Bazaar — makes it a landmark that anchors the whole market quarter of the old city.
• The heart of the temple is its inner sanctum, whose doors are plated in silver and are the shrine's most celebrated feature.
• A well-known local tradition holds that these doors are connected to the storied gates once carried away from the Somnath temple in Gujarat, later recovered and enshrined here by the Scindias — a legend visitors will hear repeated at the site, and one to enjoy as folklore rather than settled fact.
• Inside, the black-stone image of Krishna is richly dressed and garlanded, and the marble-lined interior stays cool even when the bazaar outside is at its busiest.
• Silver, marble and mirror-work combine to give the sanctum a quiet opulence very different from Ujjain's austere Shaiva shrines.
• Gopal Mandir sits within easy walking distance of the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Kal Bhairav and the ghats of the Shipra, so most pilgrims fold it into a single temple circuit through the old town.
• It is busiest around Janmashtami and during the Simhastha Kumbh, when Ujjain draws vast, peaceful gatherings of the faithful; at ordinary times a morning or early-evening darshan is calm and unhurried.
• Dress modestly, leave footwear at the stands outside, and expect security checks near the crowded market lanes.
• For food, you are in one of Ujjain's best pure-vegetarian eating quarters.
• The lanes around the temple and nearby Kartik Chowk are famous for the city's signature breakfast of poha topped with crisp sev and a coil of hot jalebi, along with sabudana khichdi, kachori and mawa-bati sweets.
• Joshi Dahi Bada House near Kartik Chowk is a long-running local institution for its spiced dahi vada, and the surrounding sweet-and-namkeen shops are reliably vegetarian; for a drink, ask specifically for plain, bhang-free thandai or a sweet lassi.
• Simple pure-veg thali restaurants along the road toward Mahakaleshwar round out the options.
