Satpura

Satpura Tiger Reserve, in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh below the hill station of Pachmarhi, is one of central India's wildest and least-crowded reserves — and the most adventurous, because it is the rare Indian national park where visitors can explore not only by jeep but on foot, by canoe, and by motorboat.

• Spread across a rugged landscape of the Satpura ranges — deep sal and teak forest, sandstone ravines, grassy plateaus, and the wide backwaters of the Denwa river, which forms the park's northern boundary — Satpura offers a wilder, more immersive experience than the busier tiger circuits.
• Tiger sightings here require more patience than at Bandhavgarh or Kanha, but the reward is genuine wilderness and an extraordinary diversity of wildlife: leopard, the elusive sloth bear (Satpura is one of the best places in India to see them), Indian gaur, sambar, the rare Indian giant squirrel, and a wealth of birds.
• The signature experiences are the walking safari, exploring the forest on foot with an armed naturalist; the canoe and boat safaris, gliding silently across the Denwa backwaters past basking crocodiles and waterbirds; and night and full-day core treks unavailable at most reserves.
• Access is via the Madhai gate, reached by a short boat crossing of the Denwa, about 100 km from Pachmarhi and well-connected to Bhopal.
• Some lodges offer multi-day fly-camping and full-day core walks deep in the reserve — an immersion in pure wilderness that is increasingly rare in India's tiger country, and a reason wildlife lovers return to Satpura again and again.
• For vegetarian travellers, the eco-lodges along the Denwa serve vegetarian buffets, and the surrounding region offers MP and Bundeli veg — dal-bafla, poha-jalebi, and hearty thali.
• The park is open roughly October to April and closed in the monsoon; the cool winter months are ideal for walking and canoe safaris.
