Balua Ghat

Balua Ghat is a broad, sandy bathing ghat on the right bank of the Yamuna in Prayagraj, lying a short way upstream of the Sangam where the Ganga and Yamuna meet the mythical Saraswati.

• Its very name tells you what to expect: "balua" means sandy in the local Hindi register, and the ghat is defined less by carved stone stairways than by a soft, shelving beach of pale river sand that widens dramatically each winter as the Yamuna recedes.
• This gives it a gentler, more open character than the tightly built masonry ghats nearer the old fort, and makes it a favourite spot for families, pilgrims and photographers who want an unhurried stretch of riverfront within easy reach of the Sangam itself.
• For pilgrims, Balua Ghat is first and foremost a place for a holy dip.
• Bathing in the confluence waters is the central act of Prayagraj's spiritual life, and this ghat is counted among a cluster of seven riverbank ghats that civic and mela authorities have periodically cleaned, lit and revitalised so that visitors can bathe, offer prayers and float diyas in relative calm.
• During the annual Magh Mela (January–February) and the great Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh gatherings, the sands here fill with kalpavasis living out their austere riverside vows, and the ghat becomes one thread in what is, by tradition, the world's largest peaceful spiritual assembly.
• Outside the mela season it is quieter, and small wooden rowboats put out from the shallows for short trips toward the Sangam point — best taken at first light, when mist lifts off the water and the low sun turns the sand gold.
• Balua Ghat is also associated with Tulsi Vivah, the autumn festival marking the ceremonial marriage of Lord Vishnu (as Shaligram) to the sacred Tulsi plant, personified as Vrinda.
• Around Kartik Purnima and the Dev Uthani Ekadashi, devotees gather on the ghat for lamp-lit rituals, singing and simple mandap ceremonies, giving the riverbank a festive, wedding-like glow.
• Come at sunrise for the light, or on a festival evening for the aarti flames reflected on the black water.
• Eating here is easy and firmly vegetarian-friendly, in keeping with Prayagraj's temple-town food culture.
• Balua Ghat has no formal restaurants of its own — expect roadside tea stalls, seasonal fruit and coconut-water vendors and simple snack carts on the approach lanes.
• For a proper meal, walk or take a short auto ride toward the Katra, Loknath and Chowk bazaars, where the pure-veg thali bhojanalayas and the famous kachori-sabzi, jalebi and dahi-jalebi stalls of the old city serve up Prayagraj's classic breakfast.
• Ask specifically for a pure-veg kitchen or thali counter when you sit down, and stick to freshly fried, hot snacks and plain (bhang-free) thandai or lassi to eat well by the river.
