The Yamuna Ghat near Kashmere Gate — its restored stretch now known as Vasudev Ghat — has become one of Delhi's most photogenic and atmospheric riverfronts, a rare place where the capital turns to face its river. For decades this bank below the 18th-century Qudsia Bagh was neglected and polluted; in 2024 the Delhi Development Authority reopened it as a landscaped, Mughal-style riverside park, the first ghat revived under a wider plan to reconnect Delhiites with the Yamuna.

About

The Yamuna Ghat near Kashmere Gate — its restored stretch now known as Vasudev Ghat — has become one of Delhi's most photogenic and atmospheric riverfronts, a rare place where the capital turns to face its river.

  • For decades this bank below the 18th-century Qudsia Bagh was neglected and polluted; in 2024 the Delhi Development Authority reopened it as a landscaped, Mughal-style riverside park, the first ghat revived under a wider plan to reconnect Delhiites with the Yamuna.
  • The ghat has two very different moods.
  • At dawn in winter, the adjoining Yamuna Bazar stretch fills with hundreds of migratory Siberian seagulls that swirl and dive over the water — a spectacle that draws photographers and early-morning visitors, who take short country-boat rides out among the wheeling birds.
  • In the evening, the restored Vasudev Ghat hosts a public Yamuna Aarti on select days (commonly Tuesdays and Sundays), around 5:30 PM in winter, its lamps reflected on the water below a landscaped charbagh (four-quartered) garden with a restored baradari pavilion, chhatris, lawns and a three-kilometre cycling track.
  • It is a place to walk, cycle, watch birds and catch the river at its calmest.
  • For vegetarian travellers the Kashmere Gate and Chandni Chowk area nearby is rich in pure-veg food — the Marwari thalis of Shri Hari Sharnam, and the sweets and snacks of Haldiram's and Bikanervala are all a short ride away.

Practical notes

entry is free and the riverfront park is best from sunrise to sunset, with the seagull-and-boat experience strictly an early-morning, winter-only affair (roughly November to March). The Yamuna is polluted, so avoid contact with the water and do not swim; the boat rides are informal and paid, so agree the price and insist on life jackets, especially for children. Come at first light for the birds, or on a Tuesday or Sunday evening for the aarti (around 5:30 PM in winter — confirm the day and time locally); wear warm layers and sturdy footwear on winter mornings. Nearest metro: Kashmere Gate. Allow one to two hours.

History & Significance

History

This western bank of the Yamuna near Kashmere Gate sits below the 18th-century Qudsia Bagh, a Mughal charbagh laid out in 1748 for Qudsia Begum.

  • Long neglected and polluted, the stretch was restored by the Delhi Development Authority as Vasudev Ghat and formally reopened on 12 March 2024 — the first ghat revived under a wider plan to rejuvenate the Yamuna floodplain from Wazirabad to the Old Railway Bridge.
  • The nearby Yamuna Bazar stretch had meanwhile become famous among photographers for its winter congregation of migratory seagulls.

🏛️ Architect: The redeveloped ghat is landscaped in the Mughal charbagh style, echoing the neighbouring Qudsia Bagh, with a restored baradari (twelve-doored pavilion), scattered chhatris, lawns and a cycling track; the main ghat runs about 145 metres with stone steps down to the river.

Significance

The Yamuna Ghat at Vasudev Ghat is one of Delhi's most photogenic riverfronts — famous for its winter dawn spectacle of migratory seagulls and boat rides, and for reviving a public Yamuna Aarti and a landscaped riverside park as part of the effort to reconnect the city with its river.
