About

The Nehru Planetarium is one of Delhi's best-loved science destinations — a domed sky-theatre set in the green, tree-lined grounds of Teen Murti Bhavan, the former official residence of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

  • Built by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund to popularise astronomy and inaugurated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, it draws well over two hundred thousand visitors a year to its immersive shows on the solar system, the stars and space science.
  • The heart of a visit is a sky-theatre show under the planetarium dome, projected in both English and Hindi across several slots through the day, taking audiences on a journey through the night sky and the planets.
  • Beyond the dome, the planetarium runs astronomy galleries and interactive displays, sky-watching sessions and student programmes, and displays a genuine highlight: the Soyuz descent module associated with Rakesh Sharma, India's first cosmonaut, alongside space-mission memorabilia.
  • Because it sits within the Teen Murti complex — home to the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and lovely gardens — it pairs naturally into a half-day of history and science.
  • For vegetarian travellers the Chanakyapuri area nearby offers excellent pure-veg options — the pocket-friendly Gujarat Bhawan canteen's unlimited thali, the fine-dining pure-veg Shraman at The Ashok, and Saravana Bhavan in Connaught Place are all within reach.

Practical notes

the planetarium is closed on Mondays and open through the day otherwise; the sky-theatre shows are inexpensively ticketed (with concessions for children and students), and you must arrive at least 30 minutes early, as latecomers are not admitted once a show begins. Confirm the day's show schedule and languages on arrival. Allow one to two hours for a show and the exhibits — more if you add the Teen Murti museum and gardens. Weekends and school holidays are the busiest, so book an early show slot on a weekday for the calmest visit.
