About

The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) is India's foremost museum of modern and contemporary art — a flagship national collection housed in Jaipur House, a butterfly-shaped Lutyens-era palace crowned by a central dome, set in the Central Hexagon that rings India Gate at the eastern end of Kartavya Path.

  • Established in 1954 and backed by Jawaharlal Nehru and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, it has grown into one of the largest modern-art museums in the world, with more than 17,000 works by over 2,000 artists, some dating back to around 1857.
  • The collection is a journey through the making of modern Indian art.
  • Landmark canvases by Raja Ravi Varma, the Tagores (Abanindranath, Rabindranath and Gaganendranath), Nandalal Bose and the Bengal School, Jamini Roy, and the extraordinary Amrita Sher-Gil — whose paintings NGMA holds in one of the world's largest concentrations — trace the arc from colonial-era academic art to a confident post-Independence national voice, alongside sculpture, graphics and rotating exhibitions of contemporary artists.
  • The heritage building itself, a 1936 palace once home to the Maharaja of Jaipur, is part of the experience, its domed halls and some 12,000 square metres of gallery space offering a cool, contemplative refuge beside the monuments of central Delhi.
  • For vegetarian travellers NGMA is well placed near Khan Market and Pandara Road — the pure-veg Veg Gulati, the vegetarian Pan-Asian Green Mantis, and the book-lined Cafe Turtle are all a short ride away for lunch.
