Lajpat Nagar Central Market is one of Delhi's most iconic and best-loved bazaars — a dense, buzzing warren of shops and roadside stalls in South Delhi where ethnic wear, fabrics, home furnishings and accessories sell at friendly, bargainable prices. Laid out in the early 1950s as part of the Lajpat Nagar colony built to rehouse families displaced by the 1947 Partition and named after the freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai, the 'Lion of Punjab', the market grew organically from those first refugee shops into one of the capital's oldest and liveliest shopping streets.

About

Lajpat Nagar Central Market is one of Delhi's most iconic and best-loved bazaars — a dense, buzzing warren of shops and roadside stalls in South Delhi where ethnic wear, fabrics, home furnishings and accessories sell at friendly, bargainable prices.

  • Laid out in the early 1950s as part of the Lajpat Nagar colony built to rehouse families displaced by the 1947 Partition and named after the freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai, the 'Lion of Punjab', the market grew organically from those first refugee shops into one of the capital's oldest and liveliest shopping streets.
  • Today it is above all the place Delhi comes to shop for Indian wear — suits, sarees, lehengas and dress fabrics — alongside curtains and home linen, footwear, bags, costume jewellery, cosmetics and everyday knick-knacks, much of it export-quality and all of it open to a good-natured haggle.
  • The market is also famous for its rows of roadside mehndi (henna) artists, busiest before weddings and festivals, and for a lively run of vegetarian street food that keeps shoppers going.
  • It is a rite-of-passage bazaar for bridal and festival shopping, and simply a great place to feel the energy of everyday Delhi.
  • For vegetarian travellers the market's food is a highlight — the legendary pure-veg Dolma Aunty Momos, the chole bhature and golgappe of Nagpal and Shree Balaji, and the sweets of Bikanervala are all here or right beside it.

Practical notes

the market is closed on Mondays and otherwise open from about 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, busiest in the evenings and on weekends. Bargaining is expected; carry cash (many stalls also take UPI), keep an eye on belongings in the crowds, and come by metro — Lajpat Nagar station is a short walk and parking is tight. Allow two to three hours to shop, get mehndi done and graze the street food.
