Vihigaon (Ashoka) Waterfall, Igatpuri

When the south-west monsoon settles over the Sahyadris, a broad sheet of white water crashes some 30-odd metres down a basalt cliff below the little village of Vihigaon, near Igatpuri in Nashik district.

• Popularly nicknamed the "Ashoka" waterfall — after a Hindi film whose famous song sequence was, by local account, shot on these rocks — it is one of the most photographed cascades on the Kasara–Igatpuri stretch of the Western Ghats.
• For roughly three months a year, from the first heavy rains of June through September, the fall runs at full, roaring volume; outside the monsoon it thins to a trickle and the appeal fades, so timing is everything.
• The waterfall sits at the head of a short, green trail.
• From the parking area near Vihigaon, a walk of ten to fifteen minutes through paddy terraces and dripping forest brings you to the plunge pool, where mist hangs in the air and the surrounding hills disappear into low cloud.
• The setting has made it the region's best-known adventure venue: through the rains, licensed operators run waterfall rappelling here, lowering harnessed participants down the rock face directly through the falling water.
• If you are not rappelling, the viewpoints and the pool below are reward enough — though the current during peak flow is fierce, and wading close to the base or into the deeper pools is genuinely dangerous.
• Wear grippy shoes, keep to marked paths, and treat the wet basalt with respect.
• Reaching Vihigaon is easiest as a day trip from Nashik or a break off the Mumbai–Nashik route, combined with Igatpuri's cooler climate, its old British-era rail landscape and the calm around the Vipassana academy.
• Carry your own water, expect no formal ticketing infrastructure at the fall itself, and check local weather — flash rises after upstream cloudbursts are a real risk.
• For food, plan to eat in or around Igatpuri rather than at the falls, where there are no reliable sit-down options.
• The Igatpuri belt, shaped by its meditation-retreat culture, has a strong vegetarian streak: several simple hill eateries and highway dhabas along the Nashik road serve pure-veg Maharashtrian thalis, poha, misal (ask specifically for the pure-veg or Jain preparation, as not every misal counter is pure-veg), vada pav and hot chai — ideal after a rain-soaked morning.
• Confirm a kitchen is pure-vegetarian before ordering, and carry packed snacks and drinking water for the trail itself.
