Renuka Devi Temple, Chandwad

Set against the basalt scarp of Chandwad's fort hill, about 60 kilometres north-east of Nashik on the old Mumbai–Agra highway, the Renuka Devi Temple is one of the district's most-visited Shakti shrines.

• The goddess enshrined here is Renuka Mata, revered across Maharashtra as a powerful form of the Mother Goddess and, by tradition, honoured as the mother of Parashurama.
• Pilgrims from Chandwad tehsil and the wider Nashik–Manmad belt climb to her sanctum for darshan, particularly during the Navratri seasons, when the hillside fills with lamps, marigold garlands and the steady sound of devotional song.
• The setting is what lingers: a compact temple tucked below a wall of dark rock, with the fort ridge rising sharply overhead and the plains of the Chandwad valley opening out below.
• Chandwad itself is a layered heritage town.
• The scarp above the temple carries the remains of Chandwad fort (Chandvadgad), while the twin bastion-hills of Indrai and neighbouring peaks stud the skyline — a landscape long fought over and long walked by trekkers today.
• In the town below stands the Holkar-era Rang Mahal, a reminder that Chandwad was an important centre under Ahilyabai Holkar's administration.
• Old rock-cut cells and shrines in the surrounding hills add a quiet archaeological texture, so a visit to the Devi easily folds into a half-day of low-key exploration rather than a single stop.
• Worship here is unhurried and community-rooted.
• Mornings are cool and calm, ideal for the short climb and for photography of the scarp and valley; festival days bring a warmer, busier devotional energy.
• It is best treated as a respectful pilgrimage visit — modest dress, bare feet in the sanctum, and quiet in the shrine — rather than a ticketed sight.
• Sunrise and the golden last light both flatter the fort wall behind the temple.
• For food, Chandwad is a highway town, so pure-vegetarian eating is easy if you choose carefully.
• Udupi-style and Maharashtrian veg restaurants and dhabas along the Mumbai–Agra road serve thali, dosa, poha and the region's beloved misal — ask specifically for the pure-veg or Jain preparation before ordering, as not every roadside kitchen is exclusively vegetarian.
• In the bazaar you will find sabudana khichdi, batata vada and hot chai at simple stalls, and sweet shops selling pedha and jalebi.
• For a fuller pure-veg spread, many travellers time their bigger meal for Nashik's Panchavati quarter, where dedicated satvik and Gujarati-Marwari thali houses are plentiful.
