Gokarneshwar Mahadev Temple

On the old northern edge of Mathura, on Bhuteshwar Road in the Masani locality, stands Gokarneshwar Mahadev — a modest, weathered Shiva shrine that Braj tradition counts among the city's four directional guardians.

• Local belief names it for Gokarna, remembered as a devoted reciter of the Shrimad Bhagavata, who is said to have worshipped the lingam installed here.
• Unlike Mathura's thronged Krishna temples, this is a low-key kshetrapal shrine: pilgrims come chiefly for a quiet darshan, an abhishek of the lingam, and to complete the circle of the guardian Mahadevs rather than for grand architecture.
• The devotional idea that binds it is the tradition of the char (four) Kotwal Mahadevs — four Shiva shrines said to stand watch over Mathura from the cardinal directions, so that Lord Shiva is honoured as the 'Kotwal', the guardian-constable, of Krishna's birth-city.
• Braj lore places Bhuteshwar to the west, Rangeshwar to the south and Gokarneshwar to the north, with the eastern guardian variously named in different tellings (often Pippaleshwar or Ghateshwar).
• Many Shaiva-minded pilgrims try to touch all four in a single day as a small parikrama of protection around the janmabhoomi.
• Physically, keep expectations honest: this is a compact neighbourhood mandir near Masani, not a monumental complex.
• A simple sanctum houses the Shiva lingam, with the usual Nandi, bilva offerings and modest priest-attended puja.
• It is at its most atmospheric on Mondays and during Mahashivratri and the month of Shravan, when the small courtyard fills with jal-abhishek and 'Har Har Mahadev'.
• Photograph the exterior and courtyard freely, but treat the inner sanctum as a place of worship — ask before pointing a lens at the lingam or the arti.
• For vegetarian travellers Braj is reassuring — Mathura is a pure-vegetarian municipality, and no meat, egg or alcohol belongs on this devotional route.
• One firm caution, though: Mathura is heavy bhang (cannabis) country, and thandai or lassi sold at roadside and temple-side stalls can be spiked with bhang, especially around Holi and Mahashivratri.
• A bhang thandai looks and is named almost exactly like a plain one, so never accept an unlabelled 'special' thandai near the shrines; stick to reputed, clearly non-bhang sweet-shops back in Mathura town.
• Combine Gokarneshwar with a broader Mathura day — the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, Dwarkadhish and Vishram Ghat are all a short auto-ride south — and treat this shrine as a serene, few-minutes stop that quietly explains why Shiva is called Mathura's watchman.
