Why visit
Mandu, or Mandav, is a ruined medieval capital rather than a single monument — a plateau in the Vindhya hills of Dhar district, 633 m up and cut off from the Malwa tableland by a ravine. It became the Malwa Sultanate's capital in 1406, when Hoshang Shah renamed it Shadiabad, city of joy; Akbar's armies took it in 1562. A battlemented circuit of 37 to 45 km with twelve gateways still encloses farmland, tanks, 61 protected monuments and several hundred baobabs, on India's UNESCO tentative list since 1998.
