Why visit

Leh sits at 3,524 m in the Indus Valley between the Karakoram and Greater Himalayas. It is the launch base for almost every Ladakh circuit — Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Khardung La, and the legendary Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways.

Best season

Mid-June to mid-September is the comfortable window. Flights operate year-round; the two road approaches open only in summer once the high passes are cleared of snow.

Quick tips

AMS risk is real above 3,500 m — hydrate, rest 48 hours on arrival, skip alcohol entirely. Carry cash; ATMs run out frequently in peak season. BSNL and Jio postpaid SIMs only — prepaid Airtel and Vi do not work. Tank up petrol in Leh; outbound stations are scarce.

Skip

Renting a Royal Enfield with zero high-altitude riding experience is the most common cause of accidents on the Manali-Leh route. Take the SUV if you are not an experienced rider.
