About Tamil Nadu Temples & Hills Trail

Tamil Nadu holds the greatest concentration of living temple architecture on Earth — soaring gopuram gateways, thousand-pillared halls, and bronze gods worshipped without a break for over a thousand years — and this seven-day trail threads the most magnificent of them together, ending in the cool green relief of the Palani hills.

  • It begins on the Coromandel coast at Mahabalipuram, the UNESCO-listed open-air gallery of 7th-century Pallava rock-cut temples, the Shore Temple, and Arjuna's Penance.
  • It moves inland to Thanjavur, capital of the Cholas, where the 1010 CE Brihadeeswarar Temple raises its 216-foot tower above the Cauvery delta in one of the supreme achievements of Indian architecture.
  • At Madurai, the trail reaches the Meenakshi Amman Temple, whose fourteen painted gopurams and nightly palanquin ceremony make it the beating heart of Tamil devotion.
  • From there it runs to the island Char Dham of Rameshwaram, with the world's longest temple corridor and the ghost town of Dhanushkodi at land's end, and on to Kanyakumari, the very tip of the Indian mainland, where three seas meet and the sun rises and sets over the ocean beneath the Vivekananda Rock and the towering Thiruvalluvar statue.
  • The journey closes by climbing into the Palani hills to Kodaikanal, the "Princess of Hill Stations," for the star-shaped lake, the misty Coaker's Walk, and famous homemade chocolates.
  • Throughout, the food is the glory of the Tamil vegetarian table — banana-leaf meals of sambar and rasam, crisp dosas and idlis, filter coffee, and the temple-town tiffins and sweets of the south.
  • The best season is November to March.
  • Several legs can be done by train — notably the scenic ride across the Pamban bridge to Rameshwaram — and the longer drives are broken by Chola-era temple towns such as Chidambaram, Kumbakonam, and Srirangam that richly reward a stop.
  • Some days involve long but rewarding drives; this is a grand tour of the Dravidian south, from sea-temples to hill mist.
